Blitzen Trapper

Never one to turn down the Clint-Eastwood-loner-at-the-bar-on-own night out "free ticket" I popped into Soho's Borderline to witness Blitzen Trapper. These finely tuned Portland fellows blew me away with a mini-album last year, and I fell in love with new album Into The Void and the exceptionally wonderful 'Defecting Grey'/Parachute/10CC/Queen title track last month. Chris Wilson, the ex-singer with San Francisco’s cult legends The Flamin’ Groovies has called on some old band mates to contribute to his new album, Love Over Money, due for release in September.
Guitarist Mike Wilhelm, who also played with SF psychedelic ground-breakers The Charlatans, and Groovies’ bass player George Alexander have already recorded their contributions, while Groovies guitarist James Ferrell, who played on the seminal Shake Some Action LP, is also lined up to help out.
“These guys are all out in California but the beauty of modern digital recording technology is that you can get people on a recording without them having to be in the studio – it’s all down the wire,” said London-based Chris.
“We’re not finished yet and I’m hoping to call in a couple more old friends before the album’s complete – it could end up being a very groovy affair.”

THE STANDELLS UK LIVE DEBUT!

Yes, you heard right. Legendary ’60s garage-rockers The Standells play their first ever UK live show on Saturday 19th June. The recently reborn Boston quartet are sure to blast out 'Dirty Water', 'Riot On Sunset Strip', 'Why Pick On Me', 'Try It' and the rest of their classic repertoire when they take to the London stage next month, some 50 years after their formation.
It's all happening at The 229 Venue, 229 Great Portland Street, London W1W 5PN and the fun starts at 7:00 PM (first band on at 7:30).

The seventh annual Primitive Festival takes place in Rotterdam June 2- 6 and promises its usual stellar line-up of international garage royalty. Acts already confirmed for the Shindig!-approved event include The Skywalkers, JC Thomas & The Missing Slippers and The Deaf (Netherlands), The Attention and The Staggers (Switzerland), Thee Vicars (UK), The Dadds (France), The Moving Sounds (Sweden) and David Peter & The Wilde Sect (Denmark) alongside DJs including Rob Bailey and Ben Olins (UK) and Dandy Dave, Lord Bacon and Von Bubblegum (Netherlands) plus others to be announced.
There’s also a meet and greet with members of Nederbeat legends Thea Outsiders and Q65 who’ll be supporting recent book publications.

HIP DEATH GODDESS

A celebration of the psychedelic and surreal through live performance, film and projection will take place at the end of May. Live music sets from Wolf People and The Lucid Dream, plus Kenneth Anger films and the 1968 documentary Dope.

BRONCO BULLFROG SCREENINGS AND DVD

Cult 1969 movie Bronco Bullfrog enjoys several outings in its fully remastered glory in June.
The film, which follows the ups and mostly downs of a bunch of down-at-heel East End London teenagers as they embark on spates of petty crime and experience the first pains of love, pioneered a gritty, almost documentary approach and is a long-standing favourite among fans of underground British cinema.
Director Barney Platts-Mills chairs Q&A sessions at two of the London screenings while various members of the cast and crew are rumoured to put in appearances.
A BFI Flipside DVD release is scheduled for September.
