VARIOUS ARTISTS The Knights Of Fuzz: The Garage & Psychedelic Music Explosion 1980 To Now (Dionysus; DVD)
To call this a missed opportunity would be unfair, but I am more than a
trifle disappointed. I do like author/compiler Tim Gassen's introduction and the short documentary preamble
(as this is essentially a companion piece to the Arizonan garage fiend's neo-garage encyclopaedia of
the same title – the book is also included in CD-ROM format for those who don't own it!), but a shoddy
track selection and a god damn awful recent Plasticland live clip mar what could have been a decent DVD.
On the up side, studio clips from renowned garage Gods The Chesterfield Kings, Cynics, Miracle Workers,
Fuzztones and in particular The Monkees-like promo clip of The Gruesomes hilarious 'Hey' are all of a
high quality, and worth including. Newer acts, Freddy Fortune's Fortune & Maltese and Freddy &
The Four-Gone Conclusions also make an impression, but the inclusion of borderline to abysmal acts and
Gassen's own characterless Marshmallow Overcoat seen unwise when far better acts could have been chosen.
Hopefully a future volume will include stronger material and dip into European acts too. http://dionysusrecords.com/ http://www.dionysusrecords.com/turntable/knightsdvd.html Jon 'Mojo' Mills
