BARK STAVING RONKERS: A Music Memoir
John Bobin
John Bobin, bassist in psych-pop band The Fingers and later Vertigo rock and roll act Legend, serves up his memories circa 1960-1972 in this self-published tome. Bobin is the first to admit that he's no writer, but in all fairness I stuck with it from the first to last page, regularly smiling. Sure, his structure may go off on tangents; but consider his written style akin to your dotty old uncle regaling his youth, whiskey in hand, motioning like mad!
Never one to take himself too seriously John lets us into his world and explains how he was captivated by rock and roll as a boy, the teenage sexual fumblings that came with it, and lots of potted histories of the bigger bands he shared the stage with. There're no major revelations and John's own rockin' days were never ever wild ala Keith Moon, but he does have a keen memory and his views on guitars will certainly be of interest to gearheads. Further still, all profits from the sale of this book will be given to Cancer Research… John comes across as likeable chap, totally devoid of rock pretension. Buy it and put some of your dosh towards a worthy cause.
