THE RETURN OF THE MEN FROM MEDWAY
NICK LEVY talks to DAVID READ about reunions, families and the lasting cult fame of the Medway Delta band THE CLAIM
It’s not just the ’60s and ’70s giants who can reform. What happens when you were part of a small but influential band who meant a lot to those in the know and just wanted to make enough money to keep going? Medway Delta kings The Claim are reforming for a show at Camden Dingwalls on 25th March with contemporaries The Dentists, and it will be a must-see for any fan of late ’80s fanzine culture.
The Claim, unluckily, never reached the heights of their spiritual forefathers The Kinks but a clear path can be drawn from Ray Davies’ lyrical attention to detail, via David Read’s words, to some of the more well known mid-90s indie scensters.
At a small pub date in Rochester back in the autumn for friends and family, many were turned away prompting the band to seek a bigger stage. “I’m looking forward to it.” David explains. “It’s going to be a real treat for me. Martin (Bishop – drums) and Stuart (Ellis – bass) have been supportive about the CD and once we had set a date it was a case of becoming familiar with the music again. So I hope those who didn’t manage to see us in Rochester are able to come along.”
Their retrospective CD, Black Path, released through Cherry Red in the autumn has clearly become the driver for the reunion, packed full of tunes that quality-wise would have sat quite nicely on The Kinks’ Face To Face or Village Green Preservation Society.
“Graham Seemark, who had recorded our music in the beginning was there to master what you hear now. David (Arnold – guitar) and I had a pretty clear idea of how we wanted it to be presented. Almost as much time was spent on the artwork as the music. We got what we were after.”
It’s true that a small but significant section of music gurus have continued to champion The Claim. Bob Stanley and Kevin Pearce are two such figures, both of whom went out on a limb by releasing records on their highly collectable Caff and Esurient labels respectively. Although now that The Claim have their chance to recapture some of that promise at Dingwalls – along with fellow Medway contemporaries The Dentists – as far as shared bills go, this promises to be a treat for the paisley shirted, polo necked, white Levis wearing fan of a certain vintage.
The Claim and The Dentists will be performing at Camden Dingwalls, London on 25th March. For more info on prices and times visit www.dingwalls.com

Le Beat Bespoke 6-
Easter 2010 (1/2/3/4 April)
STEP TO LE FESTIVAL BEAT
Returning for a sixth head turning year, over one long but fashionably hip Easter weekend, Le Beat Bespoke are bringing everyone together for yet another of their ace festival line-ups this April (1st – 4th). All of which will be taking place at the 229 The Venue on Great Portland Street, London.
World renowned for their famous all-nighters and regular live extravaganzas, The New Untouchables have assembled plenty of bang for your buck for this latest instalment with 10 killer acts from across the globe and international guest DJs spinning the best in garage, rockabilly, folk, funk, psych, soul, freakbeat, jazz, and pretty much every combination of the aforesaid genres at least 10 times over. Not to mention the usual New Untouchable touches of go go girls, record fairs, retro market stalls and cult freak cinema.
Heading up the proceedings this year are Irish pop-punk legends and acclaimed John Peel dears The Undertones; a heroes return from legendary US garage stalwarts The Sonics, who last made an appearance at the festival back in 2008; early ’80s British rockabilly revivalists The Polecats, and not forgetting the attractive prospect of catching the finest in new garage do-gooders. Namely IAHT faves Thee Vicars, Spanish garage combo Way Y Los Arrghs!!! and Dirty Water Records’s Thee Exciters.
Essentially, if ever there was a shindig not to miss, this is it.
